Planning your project

Book binding decisions that support the reading experience.

Binding connects the printed pages to the cover and determines much of how a publication handles. For books, journals, diaries and catalogues, discuss the paper and page extent alongside the intended use. A preferred cover style alone is not a complete binding specification.

Consider the page block and the cover together

Identify the finished size, page count, paper and cover construction. Explain whether the product will be read occasionally, written in daily or used as a reference. Ask to review the opening and handling of the proposed sample before confirming the finished construction.

Plan additions before the structure is final

Ribbon markers, back-cover pockets, elastic closures and decorative page edges interact with the cover or book block. Include them in the initial brief and identify any matching colour requirements. For a collection, note differences between titles and editions rather than assuming one construction suits every page extent.

Questions before you enquire

What information helps select a binding?

Provide size, page count, paper, cover type and intended use, with a reference copy if available. The team can then review a construction appropriate to the whole product.

Can a journal and a book use the same binding specification?

They may have different handling needs even if their dimensions are similar. Compare paper, page extent, cover and how the user will open or write in the product before choosing a shared construction.
