Twelve ways to finish beautifully.

Planning your project

Choose print finishing for the material, artwork and purpose.

A finishing technique should do a clear job: highlight a title, add texture, decorate a page edge or make a notebook more useful. Lovely Offset's value additions cover books, journals, diaries and packaging. The best combination depends on the actual construction and the areas of artwork being finished.

Surface decoration and tactile detail

Foil stamping introduces metallic or coloured accents, embossing creates raised detail, and Spot UV adds selective gloss. These treatments have different effects on the same design. Share the areas to be finished separately and identify the proposed paper, cover or wrap so the treatment can be reviewed in context.

Page edges and functional additions

Gilded or printed edges decorate the page block itself. Ribbons, elastic closures, magnetic flaps and paper pockets change how the product is used. Consider the position and construction of functional additions early, because they need to fit the cover, binding and intended contents.

Use a sample to resolve the important choices

Ask which sample or proof will help confirm the specific finish being considered. A visual reference communicates an idea, while an agreed physical specification identifies the material, effect and placement to be produced. Tell us which details matter most to the final product and budget.

Questions before you enquire

What is the difference between foil stamping and Spot UV?

Foil transfers a metallic or coloured material to selected areas. Spot UV creates a clear gloss treatment on selected areas. Compare the effect you want, the substrate and the artwork rather than treating the two as interchangeable.

Can I combine more than one finish?

Share the proposed combination and mark each treatment in the artwork. Suitability and production sequence should be confirmed for the actual material and construction before the specification is approved.
