Commercial print should make information easy to navigate as well as reproduce the design well. A folded company brochure, a single-sheet flyer and a multi-page product catalogue need different artwork and production decisions. Define the format around how the reader will receive and use the material.
For a brochure, provide both the flat size and the finished folded size, along with the intended fold sequence. For a catalogue, specify the page count, cover and text separately. For a flyer, state the sheet size and whether it is printed on one or both sides. These details make the brief easier to estimate accurately.
Explain which photographs, colours and product details are important to the final result. Note any barcode, QR code or small information area that needs checking in the layout. Foil, embossing and Spot UV should be shown as specific selected areas, with the paper and overall design considered alongside them.
List languages, regional editions, product-range variants and quantities for each. State whether the printed material will be handed out, mailed, inserted into packaging or displayed at an event. Include the required delivery date and destination so packing and dispatch can be discussed with production.
Supply both, and show the fold sequence. An open sheet size alone does not define the panel arrangement or the finished piece the customer receives.
Size, page count, cover and text papers, colour requirements, binding, finishing, quantity and versions all affect the specification. Provide these separately so different options can be compared on a consistent basis.
Provide artwork and quantities for each language, noting any changes to page count, images or layout. Identify common production requirements and the delivery destinations for the different versions.
